Possible Causes
Leakage current detected by internal RDC-DD module, Faulty vehicle onboard charger causing DC leakage, Moisture ingress in charge socket, Defective internal RCD/RDC-DD sensor on Alfen control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Do not repeatedly reset a charger that is tripping on earth leakage. There may be a genuine insulation fault. If in doubt, contact a qualified electrician.
- Step 1 – Power cycle and observe: Turn off the charger at the breaker for 5 minutes, then power back on. Attempt a charge and note if E002 appears immediately or only with a specific vehicle.
- Step 2 – Test with another EV: If possible, connect a different vehicle. If E002 only occurs with one car, the fault may be in that vehicle’s onboard charger or cable.
- Step 3 – Inspect for moisture and contamination: With power OFF, open the front cover. Check the Type 2 socket or tethered cable gland area for signs of water ingress, condensation, or corrosion. Dry the area thoroughly and improve sealing (check gaskets, cable glands) according to the Alfen manual.
- Step 4 – Check internal RCD test button (if fitted): Some Alfen units are installed with an upstream Type A RCD. Press the test button to ensure it trips correctly, then reset. A faulty upstream RCD can cause nuisance trips and error codes.
- Step 5 – Visual check of RDC-DD module: Locate the residual current detection module or the section on the main PCB. Look for damage or loose connectors. Do not bypass or short this safety device.
- When to call a technician: If E002 persists across different vehicles and in dry conditions, a certified technician should perform insulation resistance tests on the EVSE circuit and may need to replace the RDC-DD sensor or main control board.
