• Step 1 – Check upstream protection: Verify that the MCB/fuse feeding the Alfen charger has not tripped or blown. If it has, do not simply reset; investigate why.
• Step 2 – Inspect cable and plug: Examine the tethered cable or socket and user cable for cuts, crushing, burn marks, or melted insulation. Replace any damaged cable immediately.
• Step 3 – Verify configuration: Using the Alfen configuration tool or web interface (if available), confirm that the maximum current setting matches the supply rating and installation design. Do not set higher than the breaker rating.
• Step 4 – Internal inspection: With power OFF and locked out, remove the cover. Inspect the main power contactor and output terminals for signs of overheating, welded contacts, or loose connections. Tighten terminal screws to the torque specified in the Alfen installation manual.
• Step 5 – Test without vehicle: After checks, power up the charger with no vehicle connected. If E003 appears immediately, the fault is likely internal (contactor or PCB). If it only appears when charging, suspect cable or vehicle.
• When to call a technician: If you suspect a welded contactor or internal short, a qualified technician should test and replace the power contactor or main control board as needed.
