Possible Causes

Blocked ventilation around charger housing, High ambient temperature exceeding Alfen spec, Failing internal temperature sensor on main PCB, Loose power connections causing localized heating

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Overheating can damage components and wiring. Allow the unit to cool before opening the enclosure.

  • Step 1 – Check ambient conditions: Ensure the charger is not installed in direct sunlight or in a confined, unventilated space. Provide shade or improved airflow if possible.
  • Step 2 – Inspect for obstructions: Remove any objects blocking vents or airflow around the Alfen charger housing. Maintain the clearance distances specified in the installation manual.
  • Step 3 – Power cycle: Turn off the charger at the breaker for 10 minutes to allow full cooling. Turn back on and monitor temperature readings via the Alfen app or web interface if available.
  • Step 4 – Internal inspection: With power OFF, open the enclosure. Check for dust buildup, insect nests, or debris around the power contactor, main PCB, and temperature sensor area. Clean gently with a dry brush or compressed air.
  • Step 5 – Check terminal tightness: Loose terminals can overheat. Verify torque on line, neutral, and earth terminals, as well as contactor connections, using a torque screwdriver.
  • When to call a technician: If E004 recurs in normal ambient temperatures, the internal temperature sensor or main PCB may be faulty and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
