Possible Causes
Seized or worn internal cooling fan, Fan clogged with dust or debris, Failed fan driver circuit on main board, Broken fan power cable or connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and wait for internal capacitors to discharge before opening the unit.
- Listen for fan operation: During charging, you should normally hear the internal fan. If it is silent and E16 is displayed, suspect fan failure.
- Inspect and clean: With power off, remove the cover and locate the fan. Clean dust from blades and surrounding vents using compressed air or a soft brush.
- Check fan connector: Ensure the fan’s power connector is firmly seated on the main board and that wires are intact.
- Test fan: A technician can power the fan directly with its rated voltage to confirm operation. If it does not spin freely or fails to start, replace the fan with an Audi-approved part.
- Driver circuit check: If the fan is good but not powered during operation, the driver circuit on the main board may be defective. Replace the main control board.
Do not operate the charger for extended periods with a failed fan; overheating and further damage may result.
