Possible Causes

Overheating of internal components, Loose high-current terminal inside charger, Failing main power relay coil, Marginal output cable connection at strain relief

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power before opening the charger. Components may be hot.

  • 1. Check ambient conditions: Note if interruptions occur during hot weather or when the charger is in direct sun. Improve ventilation or shade if necessary.
  • 2. Inspect cable and connector: Look for signs of overheating (discoloration, soft plastic) at the J1772 connector. Replace the cable assembly if overheating is evident.
  • 3. Internal terminal check (qualified): With power OFF, open the charger and inspect all high-current terminals (input and output). Tighten any loose screws and look for heat discoloration.
  • 4. Relay inspection: Listen for the relay clicking off when the charge stops. A failing coil can drop out under heat. Replace the main power relay if suspect.
  • 5. Monitor with lower current: Temporarily reduce the charger’s maximum current setting (if adjustable) and see if the issue disappears. If so, internal components may be marginal and should be inspected or replaced.

When to call a professional: For internal connection and relay work, contact a qualified EVSE technician.
