Possible Causes

Main power contactor contacts welded closed, Faulty contactor feedback microswitch, Control board unable to verify contactor state, Overheating or arcing damage in contactor assembly

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: This is a high-voltage switching component. Turn off the breaker, verify absence of voltage, and do not attempt to manually force the contactor.

  • Listen for contactor operation: When the vehicle is connected and charging should start, you should normally hear a distinct click. No click or continuous humming suggests a contactor issue.
  • Visual inspection: If the BMW manual allows cover removal, inspect the contactor for discoloration, melted plastic, or soot. Any such signs require immediate replacement.
  • Check for debris: Ensure no foreign objects or loose screws are near the contactor mechanism.
  • Do not bypass: Never bypass the contactor or its feedback circuit; this defeats safety interlocks.

Because E06 indicates a serious switching fault, the correct remedy is replacement of the contactor assembly and, if necessary, the feedback harness. This should only be done by a BMW-certified electrician following official service procedures.
