Possible Causes

Corrupted firmware on BMW Wallbox control board, Failed internal relay or sensor detected during startup, Power surge damage to electronics, Incomplete previous firmware update

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the breaker before any extended troubleshooting. Do not attempt to reflash firmware with unofficial tools.

  • Full power reset: Switch the Wallbox breaker OFF for at least 5 minutes to allow capacitors to discharge. Turn it back ON and wait for the full boot sequence.
  • Check BMW app / portal: If your Wallbox is connected, open the BMW Charging app or web portal to see if a firmware update is pending or if additional diagnostic info is available. Apply any official update.
  • Inspect for surge damage: Look for burn marks or a burnt smell around the electronics compartment (if accessible per manual). If present, do not use the unit.

If E09 remains after a clean reboot and firmware check, the control board has likely failed its internal self-test and must be replaced. Contact a BMW-authorized service partner for board replacement or Wallbox exchange.
