Possible Causes

Disconnected or reversed RS485/Modbus wiring to BMW-approved energy meter, Faulty external load management controller, Incorrect meter address or protocol settings, Defective communication interface on BMW Wallbox

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power to both the Wallbox and external meter before touching any wiring.

  • Check wiring polarity: Verify that A/B (or +/−) lines on the RS485 bus are correctly matched between the BMW Wallbox and the approved energy meter.
  • Inspect cable integrity: Look for cuts, loose terminals, or crushed sections on the communication cable.
  • Verify meter configuration: Ensure the meter address, baud rate, and protocol match the values specified in the BMW Wallbox installation manual.
  • Temporarily disable load management: If possible in settings, disable external load management and test if the Wallbox charges normally without it.

If E12 remains with correct wiring and configuration, the communication interface on the Wallbox or the external meter may be defective. Replacement of the meter or communication board should be done by a qualified electrician familiar with BMW load management systems.
