Possible Causes
Internal control board self-test failure, Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) module latched, Contactor weld detection triggered, Overvoltage or undervoltage detected on AC input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the dedicated breaker feeding the ChargePoint home charger before touching the unit. Do not open the charger housing unless power is off and you are qualified to work on electrical equipment.
- Step 1 – Power cycle the charger:
- Turn OFF the EVSE breaker at the main panel for at least 2 minutes.
- Turn the breaker back ON and wait 60–90 seconds for the charger to fully boot.
- Check if the LED ring returns to normal (idle white or green) and try starting a session again via the app or by plugging in the vehicle.
- Step 2 – Verify supply voltage:
- With a multimeter and the breaker OFF, remove the front cover only if you are qualified.
- Turn the breaker ON and carefully measure line-to-line voltage at the charger input terminals; it should be within the specified range (typically 208–240 VAC).
- If voltage is outside spec or unstable, contact an electrician to correct the supply issue.
- Step 3 – Inspect for moisture or corrosion:
- With power OFF, remove the front cover.
- Look for water ingress, corrosion, or burn marks on the main control board, GFCI module, and power contactor.
- If moisture is present, allow the unit to dry completely, correct any sealing issues (damaged gaskets, open knockouts), and reassemble.
- Step 4 – Reset via app (if available):
- Open the ChargePoint app, select your home charger, and look for a Restart or Reset option.
- Perform a soft reset and test again.
- Step 5 – If red LED persists:
- The internal self-test is detecting a persistent hardware fault (often GFCI or contactor).
- Do not bypass safety circuits. Contact ChargePoint support or a qualified EVSE technician to test and replace the defective module.
