Possible Causes

Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) module trip, Moisture in J1772 connector, Damaged EV cable insulation, Vehicle-side ground fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: A ground fault indicates current is leaking to ground. Do not repeatedly reset without inspection. Turn OFF the breaker before handling wiring.

  • Step 1 – Inspect the connector and cable:
    • Unplug from the vehicle.
    • Check the J1772 handle and cable for cuts, abrasions, or crushed sections.
    • Look inside the connector for moisture, corrosion, or debris on the pins.
    • If wet, gently dry with a clean cloth and allow several hours in a dry environment before reuse.
  • Step 2 – Check for external water ingress:
    • Inspect the charger housing, conduit entries, and cable gland for gaps or cracked seals.
    • Repair or reseal any openings that could allow rain or condensation inside.
  • Step 3 – Reset the GFCI:
    • Turn OFF the EVSE breaker for 2 minutes.
    • Turn it back ON and wait for the charger to boot.
    • Try a short test charge with a different vehicle if possible to rule out a vehicle-side fault.
  • Step 4 – Insulation resistance test (advanced):
    • With power OFF and the unit opened by a qualified person, disconnect the output cable assembly from the control board.
    • Use a megohmmeter to test insulation between conductors and ground; values should be within manufacturer spec (typically >1 MΩ).
    • If the cable fails, replace the entire EVSE output cable & J1772 connector assembly.
  • Step 5 – Persistent GFCI trips:
    • If the cable tests good and multiple vehicles trip the charger, the internal GFCI module or main control board is likely faulty.
    • Contact ChargePoint or an EVSE technician to replace the GFCI module or control board; do not bypass the GFCI.
