Possible Causes

Incorrect current setting in configuration, Shorted or partially shorted J1772 cable, Failing power contactor with welded contacts, Internal current sensor (CT) fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Overcurrent can overheat wiring. Verify breaker and wiring size match the charger's rating before further use.

  • Step 1 – Verify breaker and wiring:
    • Confirm the EVSE is on the correct breaker size (e.g., 40 A breaker for 32 A charger, 50 A for 40 A, etc.).
    • If undersized, have an electrician upgrade the circuit to match the charger's nameplate rating.
  • Step 2 – Check configuration:
    • Open the ChargePoint app or web portal.
    • Verify the maximum current setting matches the circuit rating (e.g., set to 32 A on a 40 A breaker).
    • Reduce the setting if necessary and test again.
  • Step 3 – Inspect cable and connector:
    • Look for hot spots, discoloration, or melting on the J1772 handle and cable.
    • If the cable gets unusually warm during a short test, stop using it.
  • Step 4 – Internal inspection (qualified person only):
    • With power OFF, open the charger housing.
    • Inspect the power contactor, current transformer (CT), and wiring for burn marks or loose connections.
    • Tighten any loose lugs to manufacturer torque specs.
  • Step 5 – Replace faulty components:
    • If the CT is open or reading incorrectly, replace the current sensor / CT assembly.
    • If the contactor shows signs of welding or pitting, replace the power contactor.
