Possible Causes
Broken proximity switch in J1772 handle, Damaged proximity resistor, Broken conductor in cable, Faulty proximity input on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: The proximity circuit helps ensure safe disconnection. Do not bypass it.
- Step 1 – Mechanical inspection:
- Check the J1772 handle latch for smooth operation.
- If the latch is sticky or broken, the internal proximity switch may be damaged.
- Step 2 – Wiggle test:
- While charging (if it will start), gently move the cable near the handle.
- If charging stops when the cable is flexed, suspect a broken proximity conductor.
- Step 3 – Electrical test (qualified):
- With power OFF, disconnect the cable from the charger.
- Measure resistance between the proximity pin and ground at the J1772 plug while operating the latch.
- If readings are out of spec or intermittent, replace the output cable & J1772 connector assembly.
- Step 4 – Control board input:
- If the cable tests good, the proximity input circuit on the main control board may be faulty and require replacement.
