Charger reports proximity switch fault; vehicle latch detection not working; plug may be difficult to remove or charging stops unexpectedly when cable is moved.

Safety: The proximity circuit helps ensure safe disconnection. Do not bypass it.

• Step 1 – Mechanical inspection:
  • Check the J1772 handle latch for smooth operation.
  • If the latch is sticky or broken, the internal proximity switch may be damaged.
• Step 2 – Wiggle test:
  • While charging (if it will start), gently move the cable near the handle.
  • If charging stops when the cable is flexed, suspect a broken proximity conductor.
• Step 3 – Electrical test (qualified):
  • With power OFF, disconnect the cable from the charger.
  • Measure resistance between the proximity pin and ground at the J1772 plug while operating the latch.
  • If readings are out of spec or intermittent, replace the output cable & J1772 connector assembly.
• Step 4 – Control board input:
  • If the cable tests good, the proximity input circuit on the main control board may be faulty and require replacement.
