Possible Causes
Damaged J1772 charge handle, Bent or contaminated pilot pin in charge connector, Faulty control board pilot driver circuit, Damaged pilot signal wiring harness inside charger
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the charger’s dedicated breaker before opening or touching any internal components. Do not work on the unit while energized.
- Step 1 – Power cycle: Turn the breaker OFF for 2 minutes, then back ON. Reconnect the vehicle and see if E01 clears.
- Step 2 – Inspect the J1772 connector: Unplug from the vehicle. Examine the pilot pin (usually the small pin) for bending, corrosion, or debris. Clean gently with a soft brush and isopropyl alcohol. Do not use metal tools that can deform pins.
- Step 3 – Check cable strain: Look for kinks, cuts, or crushed sections in the Chevrolet-branded charge cable, especially near the handle and where it enters the wall unit. If the cable jacket is damaged or feels soft/flat, discontinue use.
- Step 4 – Test with another EV (if available): If another compatible EV charges normally, the issue may be on the vehicle side. If E01 appears with multiple vehicles, the charger is likely at fault.
- Step 5 – Internal inspection (advanced): With power OFF and cover removed, visually inspect the pilot signal wiring from the control board to the J1772 cable for loose connectors or burn marks. Do not modify wiring; if damage is found, the cable or board must be replaced.
- When to stop: If the pilot pin is damaged, the cable is cut, or there is any sign of overheating, do not use the charger. Contact a qualified EVSE technician or Chevrolet Energy/EVSE support.
