Possible Causes
Welded main power contactor, Faulty contactor feedback sensor on control board, Overheating of contactor contacts, Incorrect line voltage causing arcing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: This is a high-voltage internal fault. Do not open the charger unless you are qualified. Always turn OFF the breaker before any inspection.
- Step 1 – Power cycle: Turn OFF the dedicated breaker for 5 minutes, then turn it back ON. Observe if E03 reappears without a vehicle connected.
- Step 2 – Listen for contactor click: With the cover closed, plug in the vehicle and listen. A healthy charger will click once or twice as the contactor engages. Repeated clicking or no click with E03 suggests a contactor issue.
- Step 3 – Check for overheating signs: Feel the outside of the enclosure (with power OFF) for hot spots or discoloration. Burnt smell or yellowed plastic near the top often indicates contactor overheating.
- Step 4 – Do not bypass: Never attempt to bypass or jumper the contactor. This defeats safety interlocks and can cause fire or shock.
- Step 5 – Service: Replacement of the main power contactor or control board should be done by an EVSE technician familiar with Chevrolet-branded home chargers.
