Possible Causes

Recent power surge or lightning strike, Failed MOV/surge suppressor on control board, Damaged main control PCB, Incorrect line voltage (over 250 V) from utility

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you suspect a lightning strike or major surge, do not reset repeatedly. Inspect for burning or smoke before re-energizing.

  • Step 1 – Disconnect power: Turn OFF the breaker and leave the charger de-energized for at least 10 minutes to allow internal protection circuits to reset.
  • Step 2 – Visual inspection: Remove the front cover (if allowed by the manual). Look for charred components, cracked MOVs (disk-shaped surge parts), or burnt smell on the control board.
  • Step 3 – Check whole-home surge protection: If your panel has a surge protector, verify its status indicators. A failed protector may have allowed excess energy into the charger.
  • Step 4 – Restore power and test: Turn the breaker back ON and see if E05 clears. If the error returns immediately, the control board or surge components are likely damaged.
  • Step 5 – Board replacement: Replacement of the Chevrolet charger main control PCB or surge module should be done by an authorized service provider.
