Possible Causes
Shorted output wiring inside charger, Internal contactor arcing, Faulty current sense calibration, Vehicle drawing more current than pilot allows
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Repeated overcurrent trips can indicate a serious fault. Turn OFF the breaker if you smell burning or see discoloration.
- Step 1 – Check breaker size: Confirm that the breaker and wiring match the charger’s rated current. An undersized breaker may trip prematurely and confuse diagnostics.
- Step 2 – Lower current setting: If the charger allows, reduce the maximum current in the app or on the unit and test again. If E16 disappears at lower current, there may be a wiring or heat issue.
- Step 3 – Inspect cable and connector: Look for melted plastic, discoloration, or hot spots on the J1772 handle and cable. Do not continue using a damaged connector.
- Step 4 – Internal inspection: With power OFF, inspect the contactor and output wiring for signs of overheating or loose screws.
- Step 5 – Professional diagnosis: Persistent E16 requires an EVSE technician to test internal components and possibly replace the contactor or control board.
