Possible Causes

High resistance connection at J1772 pins, Worn or oxidized contacts in handle, Undersized or damaged cable conductors, Poor crimp inside handle

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Stop charging and turn OFF the breaker if the cable or handle feels excessively hot to the touch.

  • Inspect handle: Look for discoloration, melted plastic, or deformation around the pins and latch area.
  • Check for play: When plugged into the vehicle, the handle should fit snugly. Excessive looseness can cause arcing and heat.
  • Examine cable: Run your hand along the cable (when cool) to feel for soft spots, bulges, or stiff sections that may indicate internal damage.
  • Reduce load (temporary): If your EV allows, reduce the charging current setting to lower heat generation until repairs can be made.

Persistent overheating or visible damage requires replacement of the entire J1772 cable and handle assembly. Do not continue using a hot or deformed connector.
