Possible Causes

Crushed cable causing pilot-to-ground short, Contamination bridging pilot pin to ground pin, Internal handle failure, Damaged control board pilot driver

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the breaker before inspection. Do not attempt to operate with a known pilot short.

  • Visual inspection: Examine the J1772 handle for metal shavings, conductive debris, or corrosion between pins. Clean carefully with a dry brush.
  • Check cable damage: Look for pinch points where the cable may have been run under a door or vehicle tire.
  • Resistance test (advanced): With power OFF, measure resistance between pilot and ground at the handle. A very low resistance confirms a short in the cable or handle.

If cleaning does not resolve the short, replace the J1772 cable and handle assembly. If a new cable still shows a short, the control board pilot circuit is likely damaged and must be replaced.
