Possible Causes

Open pilot wire in J1772 cable, Damaged J1772 handle proximity switch, Faulty control board pilot driver circuit, Vehicle inlet fault preventing pilot response

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the circuit breaker feeding the ClipperCreek EVSE and verify power is off with a non-contact voltage tester before touching wiring.

  • Check vehicle: Try another EV if available, or try your EV at a different public charger to confirm the car can charge.
  • Inspect J1772 handle: Look for bent, recessed, or contaminated pins, especially the small pilot (CP) and proximity (PP) pins. Clean gently with a dry, soft brush; do not use solvents.
  • Check cable strain: Examine the cable where it enters the EVSE housing and the handle for cuts, kinks, or crushing. If the cable jacket is damaged or wires are visible, discontinue use.
  • Power cycle EVSE: Turn the breaker OFF for 2 minutes, then ON. Observe if the STATUS or CHARGING LED changes when plugging into the vehicle.
  • Test pilot continuity (advanced): With power OFF and EVSE opened (only if you are qualified), use a multimeter to check continuity of the pilot conductor from the control board terminal labeled CP/PILOT to the pilot pin in the J1772 handle. An open circuit indicates a failed cable assembly.

If the EV charges fine on other stations and the POWER LED is solid but no charging starts on any vehicle, the J1772 cable assembly or control board pilot circuit is likely faulty and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
