Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker before any disassembly. Pilot circuits are low voltage but are inside a high-voltage enclosure.
- Power cycle: Turn OFF the breaker for 2 minutes, then ON. Observe if the 2-blink pattern appears immediately or only when a vehicle is connected.
- Inspect J1772 cable: Look for physical damage, especially near the handle and where the cable enters the EVSE. Flex the cable gently; if the pattern changes, the pilot conductor may be intermittently shorting.
- Check for contamination: Inspect the J1772 pins for metallic debris or corrosion that could short the pilot pin to ground. Clean carefully with a dry brush.
- Continuity test (advanced): With power OFF and EVSE opened, use a multimeter to check resistance between the pilot conductor and ground. A low resistance indicates a short in the cable or handle.
If the pilot is shorted or open within the cable, replace the entire J1772 cable and handle assembly. If the cable tests good, the control board pilot circuit is likely defective and should be replaced.
