Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the breaker before any cable replacement. The handle itself is low voltage but attached to a high-voltage cable.
- Check handle latch: Squeeze and release the latch on the J1772 handle. It should move freely and spring back. A jammed latch can hold the proximity circuit in an invalid state.
- Test on another EVSE: If possible, plug the same handle into another compatible EVSE (if detachable) or test another handle on your EVSE to isolate the fault.
- Inspect handle body: Look for cracks, impact damage, or signs of water ingress around the latch and strain relief.
- Continuity test (advanced): With power OFF and EVSE opened, measure resistance between the proximity conductor and ground at the control board. Compare to J1772 spec values when latch is pressed/released. Out-of-range values indicate a bad handle.
If the proximity circuit is faulty, the entire J1772 cable and handle assembly must be replaced; it is not typically serviceable at the component level.
