Possible Causes
Loose ground lug inside charger, Open ground conductor in supply wiring, Corroded ground connection at service panel, Faulty ground monitoring circuit on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: A missing ground is hazardous. Do not use the charger until ground continuity is verified and restored by a qualified electrician.
- Step 1 – External check: Inspect the green or bare copper ground conductor at the charger entry point for looseness or corrosion. Do not tighten live connections.
- Step 2 – Breaker panel inspection: Have a licensed electrician verify that the ground conductor is properly landed in the service panel and that the breaker lugs are tight.
- Step 3 – Internal ground bus: With power OFF and locked out, remove the cover and locate the internal ground bus bar. Confirm all ground wires (from supply, enclosure, and cable shield) are securely fastened.
- Step 4 – Ground monitor wiring: Some Electrify America home chargers use a dedicated ground sense lead to the control board. Ensure this lead is intact and its connector is fully seated.
- Step 5 – Test continuity: Using a multimeter (qualified person), measure continuity between the vehicle connector ground pin and the service panel ground bar. Resistance should be very low (typically <1 Ω).
- Step 6 – Replace faulty components: If wiring is intact but E04 persists, the ground monitoring circuit on the main control board may be defective and the board should be replaced.
