Possible Causes
Failed proximity switch in J1772 handle, Broken proximity wire in charge cable, Misaligned latch mechanism in handle, Faulty proximity input circuit on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before inspecting the handle wiring or opening the charger.
- Step 1 – Check handle latch: Insert the J1772 handle into the vehicle inlet and ensure the latch fully engages. A partial insertion can prevent the proximity circuit from closing.
- Step 2 – Inspect handle for damage: Look for cracks around the latch area of the "Electrify Home" handle. If the latch does not spring back or feels loose, the handle assembly may need replacement.
- Step 3 – Wiggle test: With the vehicle OFF and charger powered, gently wiggle the handle while watching the display. If the error appears or disappears with movement, the proximity wiring inside the cable is likely intermittent.
- Step 4 – Internal connector check: With power OFF and cover removed, locate the cable harness connector on the main control board. Reseat the connector and ensure no pins are bent.
- Step 5 – Replace handle/cable if needed: If the proximity switch is defective, the entire cable and handle assembly is typically replaced as a unit.
