Possible Causes

Pilot pin contaminated with conductive debris, Water ingress in connector, Shorted pilot wire in cable, Faulty pilot driver on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn OFF power at the breaker before inspecting the connector or cable.

  • Step 1 – Inspect connector: Look inside the J1772/Type 2 connector for metal shavings, wet dirt, or corrosion bridging the pilot pin to other pins or the shell. Clean gently with a dry brush.
  • Step 2 – Dry the connector: If moisture is present, allow the connector to dry completely in a warm, dry location. Do not use heat guns or open flames.
  • Step 3 – Cable inspection: Check the entire length of the cable for cuts or crushed areas that could short internal conductors.
  • Step 4 – Internal continuity check (advanced): With power OFF and cable disconnected from the board, use a multimeter to verify that the pilot conductor is not shorted to ground or line.
  • Resolution: Replace the charge cable and connector assembly if a short is found. If the cable tests good but E11 persists, the pilot driver circuit on the main control board may be damaged and require replacement.
