Possible Causes
Failed proximity switch in J1772 handle, Broken proximity wire in cable harness, Contaminated or jammed latch mechanism, Faulty input on charger control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF the dedicated EV charger breaker before inspecting the connector.
- Check the latch: On the J1772 handle, operate the latch lever several times. Ensure it moves freely and fully returns. Remove any visible debris around the latch.
- Inspect the handle body: Look for cracks, signs of impact, or melted plastic near the latch area. Physical damage often indicates an internal proximity switch failure.
- Test with another vehicle (if available): If E102 appears with multiple vehicles, the fault is likely in the handle/cable or charger, not the car.
- Power cycle: Restore power at the breaker, wait for the charger to boot, and plug in again. If E102 reappears, the proximity circuit is likely defective.
- Do not bypass safety circuits: The proximity circuit prevents drive-off under load. If the error persists, schedule service to replace the J1772 handle/cable assembly or the main control board. Do not attempt to open or rewire the handle.
