Possible Causes

Water ingress in J1772 connector, Crushed or pinched cable causing conductor short, Contamination bridging pilot pin to other pins, Internal short on pilot line in cable or control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the breaker before handling damaged cables or opening the charger.

  • Inspect connector for contamination: Look inside the J1772 handle for metallic debris, mud, or water. Gently clean with a dry, soft brush. Do not insert metal tools into the connector.
  • Check cable routing: Ensure the cable is not pinched in a door, under a tire, or wrapped tightly around sharp edges. Look for flattened or sharply bent sections.
  • Dry thoroughly: If the connector has been exposed to heavy rain or snow, allow it to dry indoors for several hours before retrying.
  • Test again: After cleaning and drying, restore power and attempt to charge.
  • If E09 persists: The pilot conductor may be shorted within the cable or on the control board. A technician should test continuity and insulation resistance of the pilot line and replace the J1772 cable and handle assembly or main control board as needed.
