Possible Causes
Moisture intrusion in J1772 connector, Ground fault in vehicle charge port, Damaged insulation in charge cable, Faulty ground fault detection circuit on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Do not continue trying to charge if a ground fault is indicated. Turn OFF the breaker feeding the Ford EV charger.
- 1. Inspect for moisture: Check the J1772 handle and the vehicle’s charge port for water, condensation, or road salt. Gently dry with a clean lint-free cloth. Allow the connector and port to air dry for at least 30 minutes.
- 2. Examine the cable: Look for cuts, abrasions, or crushed sections along the Ford charge cable. Any visible damage can allow moisture in and cause ground faults. If damaged, the cable assembly must be replaced.
- 3. Check installation environment: If the charger is outdoors, verify that the wall unit cover is fully sealed and that the conduit entries are watertight. Look for signs of water streaking or rust around the enclosure.
- 4. Reset the charger: After drying and inspection, turn the breaker back ON. If the charger has a reset button or touchscreen menu, perform a reset and attempt to charge again.
- 5. Test with another vehicle: If possible, connect a different Ford EV. If E002 only occurs with one vehicle, the ground fault may be in that vehicle’s onboard charger or port.
- 6. Call a professional if E002 persists: Persistent ground fault errors with no visible moisture or cable damage may indicate a failed ground fault detection module on the charger’s control board. This requires replacement by a qualified EVSE technician; do not bypass or defeat ground fault protection.
