Possible Causes

Welded main power contactor inside charger, Faulty contactor feedback sensor on control board, Shorted output wiring to vehicle connector, Overheating of internal power relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the dedicated breaker and lock it out if possible. Do not open the charger while energized.

  • 1. Power reset: Turn the breaker OFF for 5 minutes, then ON. If E003 appears immediately without a charge request, the contactor may be stuck or the feedback circuit is faulty.
  • 2. Listen for contactor operation: When plugging in the vehicle, you should normally hear a distinct click from inside the Ford charger as the contactor closes. If no click is heard or a loud buzzing occurs, the contactor may be failing.
  • 3. Check for overheating signs: With power OFF and cover removed (only if you are qualified to work inside electrical equipment), inspect the main contactor for discoloration, melted plastic, or burnt smell. Do not touch components that may still hold charge.
  • 4. Inspect output wiring: Verify that the internal wiring from the contactor to the charge cable terminals is tight and not shorted to ground or the enclosure.
  • 5. Do not attempt to free a welded contactor: A welded contactor is a serious safety hazard. The entire contactor assembly must be replaced. Contact a licensed electrician or Ford-authorized EVSE technician.
