Possible Causes

Missing or loose equipment grounding conductor, Corroded ground connection at charger, Charger installed on GFCI breaker not recommended by Ford, Internal ground reference circuit failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the breaker and verify no voltage is present before touching wiring.

  • 1. Inspect ground connection: With the cover removed, verify that the green or bare copper ground wire is securely landed on the charger’s ground terminal and that the terminal is tight.
  • 2. Check for corrosion: Look for rust or corrosion on the ground lug or metal enclosure. Clean lightly and resecure the ground conductor.
  • 3. Verify breaker type: Confirm that the charger is on a standard 2-pole breaker as specified by Ford, not on a GFCI or AFCI breaker unless explicitly allowed. If on a GFCI breaker and nuisance trips occur, consult an electrician about moving to a standard breaker with proper EVSE ground-fault protection in the charger.
  • 4. Continuity test (electrician only): Test continuity between the charger ground terminal and the main service ground to ensure a solid connection.
  • 5. Persistent E009: If grounding is correct and secure, the internal ground reference circuit on the control board may be faulty and require replacement.
