Possible Causes

High resistance at J1772 pins due to dirt or corrosion, Worn or loose contacts in vehicle charge port, Damaged temperature sensor in handle, Excessive ambient temperature at connector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Do not touch hot metal contacts. Allow the connector to cool before handling.

  • 1. Inspect connector pins: Look for discoloration, pitting, or buildup on the power pins of the J1772 handle. Clean lightly with electrical contact cleaner and a soft cloth.
  • 2. Check vehicle inlet: Inspect the vehicle’s charge port contacts for similar signs of wear or contamination. If heavily damaged, the vehicle inlet may need service.
  • 3. Avoid extension devices: Do not use adapters or extension cords between the charger and vehicle; they can increase resistance and heat.
  • 4. Monitor cable temperature: During a charge, periodically feel the cable insulation (it should be warm at most, not hot). If the handle becomes very hot, stop charging.
  • 5. Sensor failure: If E013 occurs even when everything is cool to the touch, the temperature sensor in the handle may be defective. Replace the Ford charge cable and handle assembly.
