How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the charger breaker before inspecting the connector.
Steps to try:
- Inspect the latch: On the GM J1772 handle, press and release the latch several times. It should move freely and spring back. If it feels loose, jammed, or does not return, the internal proximity switch may be damaged.
- Check for debris: Look for dirt or ice around the latch and in the vehicle’s charge port. Remove debris gently with a dry cloth.
- Try a different vehicle (if possible): If another GM EV shows the same E03, the issue is likely in the handle or cable, not the vehicle.
- Power cycle and retest: Restore power and plug in again. If E03 appears as soon as the connector is inserted, the proximity circuit is likely open or shorted.
The proximity switch and wiring are integrated into the cable assembly on most GM home chargers. Field repair of the switch is not recommended; the usual remedy is replacement of the entire cable and handle assembly by a qualified technician.
