Kia home charger shows E05 and refuses to charge; sometimes occurs during hot weather or long charging sessions.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Overheating can damage internal components. Do not cover the charger or operate it beyond its rated ambient temperature.
- 1. Check ventilation: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the charger (as specified in the Kia installation guide). Remove any objects blocking side or bottom vents.
- 2. Inspect for direct sun exposure: If the charger is installed outdoors in direct sunlight, consider adding a shade or canopy. High solar gain can push internal temperatures above limits.
- 3. Allow cool-down: Turn off the charger at the breaker and let it cool for 30–60 minutes. Then restore power and attempt charging again.
- 4. Listen for internal fan (if present): When charging starts, you should hear a small fan inside some Kia chargers. If the fan is silent or noisy/grinding, it may be failing and should be replaced.
- 5. Internal sensor check (technician): With power off and cover removed, a technician can test the NTC temperature sensor(s) on the power module and control board. An open or shorted sensor will falsely trigger E05 and requires sensor or board replacement.
If E05 occurs frequently even in moderate temperatures with clear ventilation, schedule service to inspect the cooling system and temperature sensors.
