Possible Causes
Moisture inside Type 2 connector or vehicle inlet, Damaged insulation on output cable conductors, Faulty insulation monitoring device (IMD) inside Kia charger, Contamination or conductive debris inside charger output section
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Low insulation resistance can lead to electric shock. Do not use the charger until the cause is identified.
- 1. Dry the connector: If the charger or cable has been exposed to rain or washing, disconnect and allow the connector and cable to dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours in a warm, dry place.
- 2. Inspect cable jacket: Look for cuts, deep abrasions, or rodent damage along the cable. Any exposed conductor requires cable replacement.
- 3. Test with another EV: If E11 only occurs with one vehicle and other chargers work fine, the issue may be in the vehicle’s onboard charger or inlet. Contact a Kia dealer for vehicle diagnostics.
- 4. Internal inspection (technician): A technician can open the charger (power off) and inspect for water ingress, condensation, or contamination on the output terminals and IMD connections.
- 5. Replace IMD or cable: If the insulation monitoring device is faulty or the cable insulation is compromised, replace the affected component with a Kia-approved part.
