Possible Causes

Insulation fault detected by RCD/RCM module, Moisture ingress in Type 2 socket, Damaged cable insulation, Faulty insulation monitoring device on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Switch off the upstream breaker and verify absence of voltage before touching internal components. Ground fault issues can be hazardous.

  • Check for moisture: Inspect the Mennekes socket and cable ends for visible moisture, condensation, or corrosion. If wet, leave the charger de-energized and allow it to dry completely. Do not use heat guns directly on plastic parts.
  • Inspect cable insulation: Look for cuts, abrasions, or crushed sections on the tethered cable or user cable. Replace any cable with visible damage.
  • Reset the RCD/RCM: If your Mennekes unit has an integrated RCD/RCM test/reset button, de-energize, then re-energize and perform a test/reset according to the manual.
  • Internal inspection (qualified person): Check the internal RCD/RCM module and wiring for signs of burning, discoloration, or loose terminals. Verify that PE (protective earth) is securely connected to the terminal block and chassis.
  • Insulation monitoring device: Some Mennekes chargers integrate an insulation monitoring function on the main PCB. If all external causes are excluded, the IMD circuit may be defective and the control board should be replaced.

Do not bypass safety devices: Never bridge or bypass the RCD/RCM or PE connections to clear the error. If the cause is unclear, contact a qualified EVSE technician.
