Possible Causes

Insulation fault in vehicle or charging cable, Moisture ingress in Type 2 connector, Faulty internal RCD module in Mini charger, Damaged insulation on internal power wiring

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Danger: Ground faults can be hazardous. Do not repeatedly reset without investigation.

  • Disconnect and dry: Unplug the connector from the vehicle. If the connector or vehicle inlet is wet (rain, washing, condensation), dry thoroughly with a clean cloth and allow to air dry before retrying.
  • Visual cable inspection: Look for cuts, abrasions, or crushed sections on the Mini tethered cable. If copper conductors are visible or the sheath is deeply damaged, stop using the charger and have the cable replaced.
  • Test with another vehicle (if possible): If E04 only occurs with one vehicle, the insulation fault may be in that vehicle’s onboard charger. Have the vehicle inspected.
  • Reset RCD (if external): If the Mini charger is fed through an external RCD/RCBO, reset it once. If it trips again immediately when charging starts, there is likely a real fault.
  • Internal inspection (technician): With power OFF and cover removed, a technician should inspect internal wiring for signs of tracking, burn marks, or moisture. The internal RCD sensor coil and associated electronics on the main PCB may need replacement.

Do not bypass or disable any RCD or ground fault protection. Persistent E04 requires professional diagnosis.
