Possible Causes
Defective proximity switch in Nissan J1772 connector, Broken proximity wire in charge cable, Misaligned or damaged latch mechanism on connector, Faulty proximity input circuit on Nissan EVSE control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before manipulating the connector internals or opening the EVSE.
- Inspect connector latch: Check that the mechanical latch on the Nissan connector moves freely and fully returns when released. Remove any debris or ice that may block movement.
- Check connector fit: Insert the connector into the vehicle inlet firmly until you hear/feel a click. A partial insertion can cause proximity errors.
- Visual cable check: Look for kinks or sharp bends near the connector handle where the proximity wires often break. If the cable feels soft or collapsed at the strain relief, internal damage is likely.
- Internal connector check (advanced): With power OFF, remove the connector handle screws (if serviceable). Inspect the small-gauge wires going to the proximity switch. Tighten any loose terminals and look for broken solder joints.
- Board-side inspection: Open the Nissan wallbox and locate the proximity input terminals on the control board. Reseat the connector and check for corrosion.
If E03 persists and the latch mechanism is intact, replacing the charge cable assembly is usually the most reliable repair.
