Possible Causes

Welded main power contactor inside Nissan EVSE, Mechanical failure of contactor coil or armature, Control board driving contactor incorrectly, Overheating from loose line connections

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: This is a high-voltage internal fault. Turn OFF the breaker and do not attempt to charge until the contactor is inspected. Only qualified persons should work inside the EVSE.

  • Power-cycle: Turn the breaker OFF for 2 minutes, then ON. If E04 appears immediately without a charge request, the contactor or its sensing circuit is likely faulty.
  • Listen for contactor click: When a charge is requested, you should hear a distinct click from inside the Nissan wallbox. No click suggests a failed coil or control signal; a loud buzz may indicate mechanical binding.
  • Internal inspection (technician-level): With power OFF and verified, remove the cover. Inspect the main contactor terminals for discoloration, melted plastic, or signs of arcing. Tighten line and load lugs to manufacturer torque specs if slightly loose.
  • Check temperature damage: If insulation around the contactor is browned or brittle, replace the contactor and inspect the control board for heat damage.

Because a welded contactor can leave the output energized unexpectedly, this fault should be handled by a professional EVSE technician or electrician. Replacement of the contactor module or entire Nissan EVSE may be required.
