How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the circuit breaker feeding the OpenEVSE before opening the enclosure. Do not continue charging if you suspect a real ground fault in the vehicle.

  • Step 1 – Power cycle: Turn off the EVSE at the breaker for 1–2 minutes, then restore power and see if the GFCI FAULT clears. Try a different vehicle if available.
  • Step 2 – Inspect J1772 handle: With power OFF, open the holster and inspect the J1772 plug for moisture, corrosion, or debris between pins. Dry thoroughly and clean with electrical contact cleaner. Ensure the rubber boot or dust cap is intact.
  • Step 3 – Check cable integrity: Run your hand along the entire charge cable looking for cuts, kinks, or crushed sections. If the insulation is damaged, discontinue use and replace the cable assembly.
  • Step 4 – Inspect internal wiring: With power OFF and cover removed, verify that the ground (green), line, and neutral conductors are firmly secured and that no strands are touching other terminals. Check the pilot and proximity wires from the main board to the cable for nicks or pinches.
  • Step 5 – Test GFCI circuit: If you have a known-good OpenEVSE main board or GFCI coil, swap temporarily to confirm whether the fault follows the board. If the fault persists with a different vehicle and a dry cable, the GFCI sense circuit or coil is likely defective and the main board or coil should be replaced.
  • Step 6 – When to call a pro: If you measure any continuity between line and ground on the output cable or see signs of arcing, have a qualified electrician or EVSE technician inspect the installation and vehicle.
