Charging stops immediately, display shows 'GFCI FAULT', relay clicks off, vehicle stops charging.
Ground Fault Circuit Interruption Trip
GROUND FAULT
Display alternates between 'GROUND FAULT' and idle screen, charging will not start or stops quickly.
Leakage Current Detection
INPUT VOLTAGE HIGH
Display shows 'INPUT VOLTAGE HIGH' or 'HIGH VAC', charging is disabled for safety.
Overvoltage Detection
INPUT VOLTAGE LOW
Display shows 'INPUT VOLTAGE LOW' or 'LOW VAC', charging may not start or runs at reduced current.
Undervoltage Detection
LCD ERROR
Display shows garbled characters, blank screen, or 'LCD ERROR' message; EVSE may still function via Wi-Fi.
LCD Module or Interface Failure
NO GROUND
Display shows 'NO GROUND' and charging will not start. Vehicle may show 'Charging Error' or 'Check power source'.
Ground Reference Loss / Open Equipment Ground
NO PILOT
Display shows 'NO PILOT' or 'PILOT FAULT', EV does not detect the charger, no charging starts.
Pilot Signal Loss
OVER TEMP
Display shows 'OVER TEMP' or 'TEMP HIGH', charging current is reduced or charging stops until unit cools.
Thermal Overload Protection
OVERCURRENT
Display shows 'OVERCURRENT' or 'OC FAULT', charging stops abruptly, breaker may trip.
Output Overcurrent Protection Trip
PILOT FAULT
Display shows 'PILOT FAULT', charging stops or will not start, sometimes intermittent when moving the cable.
Pilot Signal Distortion or Short
PROXIMITY FAULT
Display shows 'PROX FAULT' or 'PROXIMITY ERROR', EV may not latch or release properly.
Proximity Pilot Circuit Fault
RELAY ERROR
Display shows 'RELAY ERROR', EVSE cannot energize output even though contactor is not welded.
Contactor Drive or Feedback Fault
RTC ERROR
Display shows 'RTC ERROR' or time-based scheduling does not work correctly.
Real-Time Clock Communication Failure
SELF TEST FAILED
On power-up, display shows 'SELF TEST FAILED' and unit will not enter ready state.
Startup Self-Test Failure
SERVICE REQUIRED
Display shows 'SERVICE REQUIRED' or 'FAULT – SERVICE', unit will not charge until fault is cleared.
Latched Safety Fault Condition
STUCK RELAY
Display shows 'STUCK RELAY' or 'RELAY WELD', EVSE refuses to start charging even after power cycle.
Contactor / Relay Weld Detection
TEMP SENSOR FAULT
Display shows 'TEMP SENSOR FAULT' or similar, unit may derate current or refuse to charge.
Temperature Sensor Open/Short
VENT REQUIRED
Display shows 'VENT REQUIRED', charging may not start with some vehicles (especially older models).
Vehicle Ventilation Request Handling
WIFI ERROR
Display or web UI shows 'WIFI ERROR', unable to connect to network or AP mode only.
Wi-Fi Module Configuration or Hardware Fault
Symptom
Charging starts but stops after a few seconds or minutes without any clear error code; EV may show 'Charging Interrupted'.
Intermittent Charge Interruption
Symptom
EVSE causes nuisance tripping of a GFCI or AFCI breaker upstream, even when no vehicle is connected.
Compatibility Issue with Upstream Protective Device
Symptom
EVSE emits a loud humming or buzzing noise during charging, louder than normal contactor hum.
Mechanical Vibration / Contactor Coil Noise
Symptom
EVSE enclosure or cable gives a mild tingle when touched, especially in damp conditions.
Leakage to Ground / Improper Bonding
Symptom
EVSE has no power, display is blank, Wi-Fi network not broadcasting, EV does not detect charger.
No AC Supply / Internal Power Supply Failure
Symptom
EVSE or cable becomes unusually hot to the touch during charging, though charging continues.
Overheating Connections or Undersized Wiring
Symptom
EVSE powers on and shows READY, but vehicle will not start charging; EV reports 'Charging Station Error' or 'Check EVSE'.
General Charge Enable Failure
Symptom
EVSE trips the upstream breaker immediately when starting a charge, but shows no specific error code.
Short Circuit or Severe Overcurrent on Output
Symptom
Frequent random resets or reboots of the EVSE during charging; LCD restarts and Wi-Fi disconnects.
Power Supply Instability / Brownout
Symptom
LCD is on but very dim or unreadable unless viewed at a sharp angle.
LCD Backlight or Contrast Misadjustment
Symptom
OpenEVSE reports wildly inaccurate energy or kWh usage compared to utility meter or vehicle logs.
Energy Measurement Calibration Error
Symptom
Scheduled charging via OpenEVSE (time-of-use) does not start at the programmed time, though manual charging works.
Scheduling / Timer Logic Fault
Symptom
Visible arcing or sparking at the J1772 connector when plugging in or unplugging, sometimes accompanied by a popping sound.
Contact Erosion / Load Disconnect Under Power
Symptom
Water or condensation visible inside the EVSE enclosure; corrosion on terminals or boards.
Moisture Ingress / Inadequate Sealing
Symptom
Wi-Fi SSID of the EVSE is not visible, and unit cannot be discovered on the network, though charging works.
Wi-Fi Radio Disabled or Failed
