Possible Causes
Pilot signal out of spec, Stuck or failed contactor, Incorrect maximum current setting incompatible with vehicle, Faulty J1772 handle or pins
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Do not attempt to force charging by bypassing safety circuits.
- Step 1 – Try another EV: If possible, connect a different vehicle to determine whether the issue is EVSE-side or vehicle-side.
- Step 2 – Inspect J1772 connector: Check for bent, recessed, or burned pins. Clean light oxidation with contact cleaner. Replace the cable if pins are damaged.
- Step 3 – Listen for contactor: When plugging in and starting a charge, listen for the contactor click. No click suggests a relay drive issue; repeated clicking with no charge suggests a pilot or vehicle handshake problem.
- Step 4 – Check settings: Verify that the pilot current setting is not set extremely low (e.g., 6 A) and that any schedule or access control features are not blocking charging.
- Step 5 – Inspect internal wiring: With power OFF, confirm that the output from the contactor is correctly wired to the J1772 cable and that no connections are loose.
