Possible Causes
Broken pilot wire in J1772 cable, Loose pilot terminal on main board, Failed pilot generation circuit on OpenEVSE board, Corroded or bent pilot pin in J1772 connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before opening the EVSE or working on the cable. Do not attempt to bend pins with power applied.
- Step 1 – Inspect J1772 plug: Examine the small pilot pin inside the J1772 handle. Ensure it is straight, clean, and not recessed. Clean light corrosion with contact cleaner and a non-metallic brush.
- Step 2 – Check cable strain relief: Look where the cable enters the EVSE enclosure. If the strain relief is loose or the cable has been sharply bent, the pilot conductor may have broken internally.
- Step 3 – Continuity test: With power OFF and cable disconnected from the board, use a multimeter to check continuity from the pilot pin in the J1772 handle to the pilot terminal on the main board. If open, replace the entire J1772 cable assembly.
- Step 4 – Board output check: If the cable is good, measure the pilot signal at the board (per OpenEVSE documentation, typically a 1 kHz ±12 V PWM). If no signal is present, the pilot generation circuit on the main board is likely defective and the board should be replaced.
- Step 5 – Verify configuration: Ensure the OpenEVSE firmware settings (via LCD or Wi-Fi interface) are not disabling the pilot or set to an invalid mode.
