Possible Causes

Leakage current from vehicle to ground, Damaged insulation in J1772 cable, Contaminated GFCI coil or board, Faulty ground fault detection circuit on main board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Treat all ground faults as potentially dangerous. Do not continue charging until the cause is identified.

  • Step 1 – Test with another EV: If available, connect a different vehicle. If the fault disappears, the original vehicle may have an internal leakage issue that needs dealer service.
  • Step 2 – Inspect cable and handle: With power OFF, check the entire length of the cable and the J1772 handle for cuts, abrasions, or signs of water ingress. Replace the cable if any damage is found.
  • Step 3 – Clean internal components: Open the enclosure and inspect the GFCI coil and surrounding area for dust, insects, or moisture. Gently clean and dry as needed.
  • Step 4 – Board replacement: If the wiring and cable are good and the fault occurs with multiple vehicles, the ground fault detection circuit on the main board may be defective. Replace the main control board.
