Possible Causes

Using GFCI breaker with EVSE that has built-in GFCI, Leakage current from filters or surge protectors, Shared neutral or wiring errors in panel, Faulty upstream breaker

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: GFCI/AFCI devices are safety-critical. Do not bypass them without proper evaluation.

  • Step 1 – Confirm wiring: Have an electrician verify that the EVSE is on a dedicated circuit with no shared neutral and correct line/neutral/ground connections.
  • Step 2 – Check breaker type: Many EVSEs with internal GFCI are intended to be used with standard (non-GFCI) breakers. Verify OpenEVSE recommendations and adjust breaker type accordingly.
  • Step 3 – Inspect EVSE for leakage: Check for moisture or contamination inside the EVSE that could cause leakage to ground.
  • Step 4 – Replace breaker if needed: If wiring and EVSE are confirmed good, the upstream breaker may be overly sensitive or defective; have it replaced by an electrician.
