Possible Causes
Broken proximity wire in J1772 cable, Incorrect resistor value in handle proximity circuit, Short between proximity and ground, Damaged proximity pin in J1772 connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power before working on the cable or connector.
- Step 1 – Inspect handle latch: Ensure the mechanical latch and button on the J1772 handle operate smoothly and fully. A stuck button can affect proximity readings.
- Step 2 – Visual pin check: Inspect the proximity pin in the J1772 connector for damage or corrosion. Clean with contact cleaner if needed.
- Step 3 – Continuity and resistance: With the cable disconnected from the board, measure continuity from the proximity pin to the proximity wire at the EVSE end. Also measure resistance to ground with the latch pressed and released; compare to J1772 spec values. If readings are off, replace the cable assembly.
- Step 4 – Board input: If the cable is good, the proximity input circuit on the main board may be faulty. Replace the main control board.
