Possible Causes
Loose line or neutral connection heating up, Intermittent pilot or proximity connection in cable, Overtemperature derating not displayed, Marginal GFCI sensitivity causing nuisance trips
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Repeated interruptions can indicate overheating or arcing. Inspect promptly.
- Step 1 – Observe pattern: Note whether interruptions occur at a consistent time into the charge or only when moving the cable.
- Step 2 – Cable movement test: While charging (and observing safety distance), gently move the cable near the handle and enclosure. If charging stops when the cable is flexed, the cable conductors or pilot are likely damaged; replace the cable.
- Step 3 – Check for heat: After a short charge, carefully feel (without touching bare conductors) the EVSE enclosure, cable entry, and contactor area for unusual warmth. Hot spots suggest loose connections that must be tightened with power OFF.
- Step 4 – Review logs: If your OpenEVSE logs errors via Wi-Fi, review them for hidden overtemp or ground fault events.
- Step 5 – Professional inspection: If you cannot identify the cause and interruptions persist, have a qualified technician inspect the EVSE and branch circuit.
