Possible Causes
Broken proximity switch in J1772 handle, Damaged proximity resistor, Stuck or broken latch mechanism, Broken proximity wire in cable
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before inspecting the connector in detail.
- 1. Check the latch: Ensure the mechanical latch on the J1772 handle moves freely and fully engages when plugged into the vehicle. A stuck latch can prevent proper proximity signaling.
- 2. Inspect for physical damage: Look for cracks or deformation around the latch area of the Primecom handle. If the plastic is broken, the internal switch or resistor may be damaged.
- 3. Wiggle test: While the charger is powered and connected (but not charging), gently move the handle. If the error appears or disappears with movement, the proximity wiring is likely intermittent.
- 4. Replace handle assembly: The proximity components are typically integrated into the J1772 handle and not serviceable individually. Replace the entire handle and cable assembly if faulty.
- 5. Verify with another charger: If another EVSE charges the vehicle without issue, this confirms the fault is in the Primecom handle or cable.
