Possible Causes
Damaged J1772 charge handle, Open or shorted pilot wire in output cable, Faulty control board pilot driver circuit, Corroded or bent pins in vehicle inlet or charge gun
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the charger at the breaker and disconnect the vehicle before inspecting anything. Do not open the charger enclosure unless power is locked out at the service panel.
- Power cycle the charger: Turn the dedicated breaker OFF for 2 minutes, then back ON. Reconnect the vehicle and see if E1 clears.
- Inspect the J1772 connector: Check the pilot pin (smallest pin) and other contacts for corrosion, bent pins, or debris. Clean gently with a dry, soft brush. Do not use liquids. If the plastic is cracked or pins are loose, the output cable/handle assembly should be replaced.
- Check cable strain: Make sure the output cable from the Schumacher wall unit to the handle is not sharply kinked, crushed, or cut. Visible damage indicates the cable assembly must be replaced.
- Try another vehicle (if available): If the charger works on another EV, the issue may be with the vehicle inlet rather than the Schumacher charger.
- If E1 persists: The pilot driver circuit on the main control board may be faulty. Do not attempt board-level repair; contact a qualified EVSE technician or Schumacher support for control board diagnosis and replacement.
