Possible Causes

Broken proximity switch in J1772 handle, Damaged proximity wire in cable, Misaligned latch mechanism, Faulty proximity input on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the breaker before inspecting the handle wiring. Do not disassemble the handle beyond what the manufacturer allows.

  • Check latch operation: Squeeze and release the latch on the J1772 handle. It should move freely and fully return. If it sticks, clean around the latch and remove debris.
  • Inspect cable near handle: Look for kinks or crushing near the handle where the proximity wire is most stressed. Damage here often requires replacing the entire cable/handle assembly.
  • Test with another charger (if possible): If your vehicle charges normally on another EVSE, the fault is likely in the Schumacher handle or control board.
  • If E11 persists: The proximity circuit in the handle or on the control board is likely defective. Replace the handle/cable assembly first; if that does not resolve it, the control board may need replacement by a technician.
