Possible Causes
Blocked ventilation openings, Failed internal cooling fan, High ambient temperature above rating, Thermal sensor failure on control board or power module
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the charger at the breaker and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes before inspection.
- Check installation clearances: Ensure the Schumacher wall unit has the minimum clearance specified in the manual (typically several inches on all sides). Remove any stored items blocking vents.
- Inspect vents: Vacuum dust and debris from intake and exhaust grilles. Do not spray liquids into the charger.
- Listen for fan operation: With power restored and a charge started, listen for the internal cooling fan. If the fan does not run or makes grinding noises, it likely needs replacement.
- Check ambient temperature: If the charger is installed in a small, unventilated garage or enclosure, temperatures may exceed the unit’s rating. Improve ventilation or reduce charging current (if your model allows current setting) to reduce heat.
- If E5 recurs quickly: The internal temperature sensor or power module may be faulty. Do not continue using the charger in this condition; contact a service technician for fan, sensor, or power module replacement.
