Possible Causes
Welded main contactor contacts, Faulty contactor coil driver on control board, Shorted power module causing high inrush, Mechanical obstruction in contactor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the breaker and verify the charger is de-energized before any internal inspection. This fault involves high-voltage components.
- Power cycle: Turn the breaker OFF for 5 minutes, then ON. If E6 appears immediately without attempting a charge, the charger’s self-test is detecting a stuck relay.
- Do not attempt to force the relay: Internal contactors are not user-serviceable. Forcing them can create a fire or shock hazard.
- Check for signs of overheating: If you are qualified and the design allows, remove the front cover and visually inspect the main contactor for burn marks or melted plastic. If present, the contactor assembly must be replaced.
- Contact service: A welded or stuck contactor is a critical safety fault. Do not use the charger until a qualified EVSE technician or Schumacher-authorized service center replaces the contactor and inspects the control board for damage.
